Irrigation Configurations

2 Meters Irrigation configurations are the most desirable configuration. They are a devoted meter or curb stop for the irrigation system. This allows for isolation of the two water systems and separate billing.

Although under the house plumbing taps can be used on any house or building, it's most commonly used in colder climates. The backflow and/or valves are usually situated in the basement or crawlspace for protection.

For those properties fortunate enough to be adjoining a body of water such as a lake, a submersible or surface centrifugal pump can be a reliable, economical source for an irrigation system. Many lakes require at least a single check valve on the system while others require a double check valve.

Understanding Manifold Valves

One of the two main valve configurations that are used is the manifold valve configuration. All the valves are in one location, possibly buried in one large rectangular valve pit. A central location can help quicken troubleshooting for malfunctions or repairs.

The satellite valve configuration is a method that’s commonly used for larger properties. It involves placing the valves in the area that they serve. An as-built plan or schematic should be produced for systems installed in this manner.

The first part of a sprinkler system is the supply point. There should be a ball or gate valve at the beginning of the system, to isolate the irrigation system from its source. Meters typically have a shut-off valve on them, but when tapping into other pipes, it’s prudent to install one, as not all backflow preventers have shut-off valves on them. The supply determines the water pressure and flow available to the irrigation system.
